Was speaking to Prof. Ivan Damjanov, he said that he was working on a creating a 'Croatian USMLE' exam in which students in med schools in Croatia could practise for taking the USMLE. The exam would feature questions from all the required subject sections. He said he was currenting working on the pathology questions, and should have a full practise exam ready by the end of the coming school year. The questions would of course be in english are are intended for Croatian- and enlish-langauage med students. I think it would be good to have a USMLE practise exam for med students in Croatia, prepared by someone who has done USMLE questions in the past and teaches an important component for USMLE exams, namely pathology.

You know Damjanov? Wow... I've read an interview with him when I was a freshman, and instantly fell in love with him.
His idea is great, I'm very, very interested... Where can I apply?
Is there any way we can help?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We really need something like USMLE urgently, but not just to make our school look like an american school, but to gain quality like an american medical school.
I don't think people who run our school understand the importance of such way of studing... Yale, for example, has tests for the first two years of med school, for every subject, but the tests are anonymous and their only purpose is student's self-evaluation. Then comes a thing like USMLE, which, in comparison to our system, eliminates all the "crap" we had to study, and pools out really important questions, questions that matter.
Croatia doesn't stand a chance for that kind of a system right now, because, it would mean eliminating a lot of this "crap" things we have to study, that would mean a lot of people would get fired, and revolutions don't happen so easily.
Besides, for USMLE-like system, you need to change admission criteria drastically here, and by that I don't mean switching from entry exam to this...hybrid... we're trying to have, it means really following admission criteria guidelines valid in the world today.
That's all I wanted to say.

Hi, Sentinel!
Some students are working on the idea of getting the school to purchase an institutional subscription to a US based USMLE-prep database (e.g. Usmleworld) so students can practise for the USMLE. This of course would be available to both Croatian- and English-language students. We presented the idea to the Dean along with other ideas. She sounded very interested. Not only are some english-language students interested in writing the USMLE, but also some Croatian-langauge students. Its a good way of integrating the two streams at the school and helping out all students that may wish to practise outside someday. We may even try to get the school to provide a prof., who has successfully passed the USMLE, as a sort of instructor in combination with the USMLE prep website. i'll try to add further updates as information becomes cleared, but don't expect much new before next school year!
Damjanov visits the school for about a week during the middle of pathology (in the spring), so perhaps he'll have something ready the next time he visits.

I'm really interested, so you can count on me!
But, I must tell you, our Dean always "sounds" interested
But usually her interest means nothing, but if you have a good project, they'll give you as much money as you need.
For example, that useless thing called CROSS, they pay around 80 000 kn. I think it's pretty clear what I mean

It's definitely a great idea, even though I think the USMLE can't guarantee the quality of education here in Croatia.
Nonetheless it's a fantastic idea; it would give Croatian students a taste of what American medical students
have to go through in order to get a license. The USMLE tests your wits as well as your medical knowledge,
so it'd be nice to get acquainted with the various types of questions a student could encounter on the USMLE.
I think the idea might need more traction though...
Besides, the science is the same everywhere
Just be a zealous and relentless student, and you'll be sure
to get a residency in America. After that, may God help you... be prepared to be stomped and spit on... by both
your patients and your attendings
sanjuro, do you mind if I ask - are you interested in working in the US or just passing the USMLE?
( Btw... the "stomped on" bit was just a bit of sarcasm.
Working in America ought to be very fun! )

If I may ... there is actually something similar to USMLE here in Croatia. Not in Zagreb but in Split.
About 2 years ago, when Matko Marušić became the dean of Split Medical School he introduced something called http://www.mefst.hr/...lt.aspx?id=1648
In a rough translation, it would be something like Comprehensive exam 1 & 2; he even called Ivan Domjanov to help him in the process. However, his initiative was not met with positive reactions from students. He wasn't reelected as a dean this year, and new dean and his vice - dean are not so enthusiastic anymore.
